IFS has returned to Rochester and is on exhibit at Bausch and Lomb World Headquarters   The collection has wound its way back from its overseas jaunt and after its stop at LSU it has now arrived back in Rochester. It is slightly the worse for wear but still in quite respectable condition. Several photographs of it's current venue, the Bausch and Lomb Gallery, are available below. They were made by Eugene Kowaluk of the UofR's Laboratory for Laser Energetics. There was a gala opening on February 03, 2006 at the gallery. The exhibition wil remain on view from Monday-Friday between 6am and 7pm and on Saturdays from 8am to 2pm until the end of April 2006. It is slated for exhibition at the IS&T National meeting that is coming to Rochester in May 2006. Click on each of the buttons to see the exhibition venue and state of the exhibition.

IFS back from Europe and now at LSU   I'm attaching several photos of the Images from Science exhibition currently on displa in our library.   As you'd mentioned to Dee Jones, the labels for each item had become a bit dog-eared, so we reprinted them, and will include the reprinted versions when we return the exhibit.   In addition to displaying Images from Science in our library, we also publicized it one morning during our monthly display in the lobby of the Biomedical Research Institute.   Click on each of the buttons to see the exhibition venue and state of the exhibition.           Sincerely,
Michael Watson, Associate Director, LSU Health Sciences Center Library, Shreveport, LA - January 9, 2006 2:16:34 PM EST
IFS on exhibit at La Coruna - Spain   Not much to report about this but the colection was exhibitied in conjunction with an international Visual Literacy conference from the middle to the end of August, 2005 after having been in Puerto Rico for a month long exhibition after its Harvard stint. Click on the button below to see a photograph of how part of the exhibition looked like at the La Coruna venue.

IFS on exhibit at Harvard University   Here are a few pix of the IFS exhibit. It went up on Feb. 2nd. We have had nothing but positive reactions to the exhibit. The director of the Center wants to know if we can purchase the exhibit as a whole. I don't know if that is possible but we'll explore things in greater detail. Also, another option he had in mind was to have a survey of the employee's favorite images and purchase the top five. I guess in that case we will contact the photographer directly. Let me know what you think. I am still working on the people at the Ecotarium. We'll keep the exhibit as long as its available. Our New England chapter of the BCA is trying to put together a reception/mtg to show off the images too. Click on these icons to see photographs of the installation.

IFS shown at Swedish National Medical Convention   The exhibition was successfully shown at the Swedish National Medical Convention in Goteborg Sweden in the first week of November at the Svenska Massan. This conference was attended by more than 25,000 medical professionals. All feedback that was shared was very positive Click on these icons to see photographs of the installation.

IFS makes an appearance at J&J in New Brunswick   Early in June 2004 the exhibition was installed at the World Headquarters of the Johnson and Johnson Corporation located in New Brunswick, NJ. It was reviewd by Jim Boyle of the Princeton Packet Newspaper and appeared also on the online version of the paper. The photographs will remain there until July 12 and will then travel on to the College of DuPage in Chicago. Select Packet Online to read the review.

The Exhibition, Version II, exhibited in the Netherlands   Dear Michael, The exhibition was shown in the Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem from November 07th until November 15th. We hung it in a corridor that connects important parts of the building; around lunchtime it is always quite crowded there. Before that I translated all of the captions, which is a hell of a job to do.   We got many nice responses to the exhibition, from NVMAC members as well as many others. At the NVMAC meeting many of those present let us know they were interested to have the exhibition in their hospital too. We also have a response from a school to show the exhibition on the day of their education-marathon in February 2004. Greetings from, Caty & Michel Wijn

The Images from Science Exhibition has gone international and was featured at the Lennart Nilsson Conference held in Stockholm Sweden October 9-11, 2003. A photograph of the installation is available HERE and one of Lennart Nilsson viewing the exhibit HERE
The conference was attended by 140 delegates and the show received very positive feedback. In fact, it was invited to be shown in Amsterdam at the Academic Medical Center for display. It will travel throughout the Netherlands for the next 3 months.

The Top Ten Books I¹d like to See Under the Tree
Camera Arts Magazine, Dec/Jan 2003, http://www.cameraarts.com/
Michael More

Integrity Times Ten
Most books exist to make money, secure an author¹s reputation, or persuade us about a cause. But these ten photo books lack any ulterior purpose. Their creators (writers, editors and designers as well as photographers) have made great effort to offer us something we would never have otherwise. Together these books-an original history, a pile of snapshots, stunning science photos, a private journal, a brilliant critical study, and the rest-²suggest the scope of the ³camera arts² All were published in 2002. Any would make a fine gift for a perceptive, receptive reader.

5 - Images from Science (Cary Graphic Arts Press, , $19.99) Images from Science: is a catalog of 58 photos from an exhibit at the Rochester Institute of Technology, created by two professors there, Michael Peres and Andrew Davidhazy. They started with a $17,000 budget and the ambition to produce an exhibit, a website and a catalog that would prove ³that science has much to contribute to the world of the artist and that aesthetic sensibilities are vital in creating and comprehending images from science.² Did they ever succeed! Scientists from all over the world submitted pictures that are delightful, gorgeous, and instructive. These include a color micrograph of a transparent pregnant flea, a photo of a white blood cell attacking a group of bacteria, a sequence that translates the surface of the human brain into patterns of electronic circuits, dazzling views of stars, and dozens of other subjects. The captions are models of clarity. The catalog comes with a plastic lenticular screen, a rigid plastic card with fine lines. When you look through it at the messy illustration of a ³Protein-DNA complex² on page 44, a 3-D picture suddenly reveals its elegant spiraling structure. The quotation above is from a exhibit¹s comprehensive and comprehensible overview essay by Dr. David Malin from the Anglo-Australian Observatory in Melbourne. And for once a website matches a book. Go to and see why this exhibit is so unusual and worthwhile.

Well, now that the original, physical, exhibition in the school's Photo gallery has closed we hope that this web based legacy of the project will continue to amaze, instruct and delight visitors to this website for years to come. The 59 prints, mounted on 22x22 inch foam core boards and laminated for protection, have been stored but are available to qualified parties for exhibition. Contact Michael Peres or myself if you are associated with an organization that may be interested in hosting them sometime in the future.

I was just told the exhibition was extended and may still be open. If so, please reply at the address above and let me know. Am really hoping this is the case, such a stunning exhibition needs a longer running venue.

Michael, This was the best collection of images from science I have ever seen. The team behind it made an extraordinary work putting it all together. The quality of the work presented clearly shows that image processing and presentation is an essential part of science. The knowledge and skill represented in each and every one of the presented images is something that should be spread throughout the scientific community. My sincere congratulations to an extraordinary exhibition.

Andrew - Michael - Amelia, Thank you so much for this opportunity to show our work. Although we reach millions of viewers with our images and our website, there are few precious occasions that we get to stand next to our work and meet some of the people that it was meant to reach. What a completely fulfilling and inspiring event. Thanks so much for hosting it. Sincerely, Lisa Frattare on behalf of myself, Keith Noll and Zolt Levay, Hubble Heritage Team, STScI
