This is how much metal needed to be removed from the assembly. It is just a little less than the diameter of the outer "tube" of the assembly. It slides over the back of the lens element tube and provides flare protection for the image going on to the film or image sensor. Without this protection the possibility of picking up flare from internal reflection from within the lens body cavity is significant.
