Little Faces exhibition makes its first
international stops in Guaymas and Obregon, Mexico

under watchful eye of Alberto Tirado

from September 6 through September 25, 2001

The story in a nutshell of the Little Faces, aka Caritas,

exhibit stopover in Guaymas and Obregon, Mexico.
Once upon a time .... Date: Sat, 02 Jun 2001 10:38:03 -0700 From: Alberto Tirado Subject: Little Faces Traveling Exhibit Andy, Please include me on the itinerary of the "Little Faces Traveling Exhibit". I am in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico, which is 400 Km south of Nogales, AZ. Let me know all of the details as the date comes close (amount of time of exhibit, next adressee, etc...). I will send you a report of the exhibit when it is done. Best regards, _______________________________ Alberto Tirado Subgerente de Promoci—n y Desarrollo API Guaymas
Date: Sat, 02 Jun 2001 13:56:10 -0400 (EDT) From: ADavidhazy Hi Alberto, Congratulations! You are the first person on the list! Now to start to figure this out .... ;-) guess I should have thought this through a little more!!!! Well, let's see ... I was in the process of setting up a process but I think I will just try to do this in as informal a way as possible. So, since you are first ... when would you like to receive them? I would not suggest a long duration for "exhibition" ... maybe a week or at most two. One being preferable but it is your call. I will build the schedule around you! I guess I should put together a itinerary and state on it who will have it and when, etc.! You just caught me off guard! Anyway, remember even if the exhibition does not materialize due to problems of any kind that is OK ... again, "low stress" are the operating words! Let me know what would work for you and where I should ship them and by when. Andy
Date: Sat, 02 Jun 2001 13:50:33 -0700 From: Alberto Tirado > Congratulations! You are the first person on the list! Oh, one of the advantages of working on saturdays ;-) > guess I should have thought this through a little more!!!! Well, when I read that I started pondering other ideas. For one, I have an exhibit space. It is a house in which local artists join to teach and do some other exhibits. We have never had a photo exhibit so far! (I still have to gather enough of my own photos at one same time). This is my first (and best) option at the moment and it is for sure. You are confirmed for the date of your choice. Another idea, more ambitious but quite feasible, is to schedule the exhibit to be set up for Fotoseptiembre - the most important photo event in Mexico. Alfonso de Castro (a former Photoforum and Fotored subscriber) already left me here twenty seven 20x24's just for that. Looks his photos are going to be the opening exhibit this year! We could try (I know the organizers) if you would like, but then the photos would have to stay at least for a full month (on second toughts, maybe they will ask for the donation of one piece, or something...) In any case, the idea is there open for our consideration, even in another year. > when would you like to receive them? I am ready and waiting. However, I think it would be advisable to wait a little so as to have at least a few recipients, so an itinerary can be laid out. I don't have a problem. I even can keep the pictures safe until someone else asks for them. I am not in a hurry either, but I must admit that I got genuinely excited when I saw the samples! > ... again, "low stress" are the operating words! Now, I like THAT policy! :-) > Let me know what would work for you and where I should ship them and by when. Best regards, Alberto Tirado
Date: Sat, 02 Jun 2001 17:35:41 -0400 (EDT) From: ADavidhazy Alberto, great! you have a gallery in your house!? fantastic! Anyway, I don't think the little inkjet prints are really "museum" quality ... the thought I had is that if they caused a little amusement and discussion (like "who would ever want to be photographed like _THAT"! or "i wonder how they did that?" (of course these days most everyone will say: morphed on a computer!) ... or, "gee ... I have never seen anything like that!" ... They are of course not archival, etc. ... partly the reason I am not overly "posessive" about them! But, I think they still invite examination, cause the creative and intellectual juices to become activated (hopefully!) in short, they may help time and life pass with a bit more excitment. So, we will wait a while and see how the itinerary "develops". As for Fotosetiembre ... hmmm some of my Phoenix nudes might be applicable there!! ;-) well, have a good weekend ... what is left of it. I have to revise an article for an encyclopedia ... ugh! ... been avoiding it all day!! (well, all year!!!) take care, Andy
Date: Thu, 05 Jul 2001 18:14:48 -0400 (EDT) From: ADavidhazy Hi Alberto, Well, the "show is on the road"! It will open in Lancaster, CA on July 14 and they will have it on exhibit until July 29. The person that is hosting it is "our" Marilyn Dalrymple of PF fame. The collection is on exhibit in a small fine ar store/gallery owned by a friend of Marilyn. She was on TV being interviewed about the "strange" photographs!! and a short article announcing the opening reception at the store (one way to maybe draw in crowds!) appeared in her town's paper. I will ask her to send the set to you as soon as possible after the 29th. Will that be OK for you? Maybe if you can handle them in August then you could forward on to Luis Miyashiro (of Fotored fame!) for exhibition in Peru in September. In fact, I have a small itinerary listing at: http://www.rit.edu/~andpph/davidhazy.html and will be posting some kind of updates/news as time goes by. I have also received a statement of interest from Carlos Guardia ... I forget right now where he is ... maybe Panama? for exhibition in February ... I wonder what shape the prints will be then!!!! This is getting interesting! Andy
Date: Fri, 06 Jul 2001 08:51:26 -0700 From: Alberto Tirado Andy! > Well, the "show is on the road"! That's GREAT news! It is a very good idea to promote the involvement through mass media - we don't have a TV station in Guaymas, but I'll see that local magazines and newspapers cover the story. Of course, this is of curricular interest, so I'll save copies for you. > I will ask her to send the set to you as soon as possible after the 29th. > Will that be OK for you? That's fine, I'll arrange for everything during the next week. I'm thinking of computer-printing a small invitation, so maybe I'll ask for permission to reproduce one of the photos in a small size (about 1/4th of letter paper). > http://www.rit.edu/~andpph/davidhazy.html Wow! Talk about a traveling show! I hope we can all keep up with the itinerary - I mean, we depend on the mail service, or are we talking courier? Just curious as to what would be better to all involved. > ... I wonder what shape the prints will be then!!!! Well, a little twisting and bending might add interest to the conversation! Good! ATirado
Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2001 12:39:01 -0700 From: Alberto Tirado Dear Marilyn and Andy, I just got a phone call from home a minute ago - the Little Faces have arrived! However, I think I will have them ready until next monday (will prepare them over the weekend) - sooner if I get some friends to help me. If I have time (considering that others are awaiting) I can take them to Hermosillo, the State's capital, where a lot more people can see them. In any case, I'll keep you informed of the development of things here. Best regards, _______________________________ Alberto Tirado Subgerente de Promoci—n y Desarrollo Puerto de Guaymas
Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2001 16:05:20 -0400 (EDT) From: ADavidhazy Hi Alberto, Great! glad to hear you got them at last! As for how you deal with them I would not worry about that too much and just do what you want and is possible without a headache! Luis Miyashiro gets them after you and I am sure that there is not a really firm deadline for him. However, you might want to drop him a line ... if you feel like it (!) ... at: yoshifer@ec-red.com I am quite sure that Liese Rickets is not on any fixed schedule as she was bringing them to her classroom to share with her students as far as I know so she could just have them for a week or so and be done with it ... all I am trying to say is that I believe there is some "elasticity" in the schedule. :) Andy
Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2001 16:46:39 -0700 From: Alberto Tirado Dear Andy, > Luis Miyashiro gets them after you and I am sure that there is not a > really firm deadline for him. I checked the schedule and I began to worry that we could accumulate delays so by the time, say, Becquer is supposed to get the photos, we could be quite behind in time - I understand he goes on vacation on January. Then again... if we ALL depend on the postal service, we should be prepared to improvise! :-) I'll contact Luis, just to update him on the current state of things and see if he's got something to say about it. Like you say: Cheerio! Alberto
Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 15:02:23 -0400 (EDT) From: ADavidhazy Alberto, I had another thought WARNING: dangerous!! What if I printed another set and then not only would you have plenty of time but each person would have two months to deal with them instead of just 4 weeks? I will start the printing process hopefully this evening and report back later. I thought there was a certain "charm" in getting just one set traveling but given the time constraints particularly associated with international mail forwarding maybe two sets would work out better. What do you think? andy
Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 17:27:11 -0700 From: Alberto Tirado > What if I printed another set and then ... What do you think? Oh! I didn't mean to cause more trouble! That would mean re-scheduling the remaining locations... I don't have a big problem having to send the photos away in a short time, but I am more worried for the date in which Luis or all of the others will get them. I had't count on international mail delays. On the other hand, a second set could spark more interest in aditional locations! By the way: nice self-portrait! Best regards, Alberto Tirado
Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2001 14:08:35 -0400 (EDT) From: ADavidhazy Alberto, Great! I think keeping track of two sets should pose no major problem and it will take the pressure off anyone in terms of dealing with them. I will let you know where to send them after the "run" in Guaymas. Let me know if I can be of any assistance. andy > Andy! > The exhibit will open in Guaymas until next Monday - sorry I forgot to keep > you updated! > If you really could send the second set to Peru, then we could alternate on > the schedule (I would send to Liese Rickets in Chicago and Luis to Sam Wang > at Clemson University). I hope it is not too much trouble to keep track of > two sets. > So, basically, I personally welcome the inclusion of a second set. Just let > me know about any changes in the mailing instructions. > Best regards, > Alberto
Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 12:46:04 -0700 From: Alberto Tirado Dear Andy, Still another change, due to the insistence of the gallery to have enough time to promote the event. The gallery will be at the ITSON university in Guaymas. Very reputable, but they won't allow for alcohol during the reception, so I will arrive full drunk already :-P. The closing date will be my call, so I am waiting for you to tell me something. Even if it is to press on me! They are very excited, so I hope they do a good job that is worth the wait! I am planning to publicize as "Caritas" (little faces, literally) if you don't mind. Once again, sorry for the trouble (and the associated delay). Best regards, Alberto
Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 15:54:53 -0400 (EDT) From: ADavidhazy Hi Alberto, Great! - just don't arrive drunk on wheels! As for advice regarding closing date - I guess to some extent it depends on where they are displaying them. Personally I think that something like two weeks is the maximum I would suggest. Don't want people to get bored with them. After a while the novelty wears off!! In any case, things are arranged with Liese and since she was scheduled for October you can take your time! Let me know if there is anything else I might do. I believe there is an article in spanish about camaras de barrido ... but unfortunately the spanish verision of how this digital camera improvisation was put together is not yet ready. Bec was asking for it and so I _will_ have to produce it soon! I wish I could be there ... !!! ... and thanks again for taking the time and putting in the effort to host these "caritas" ... perfect!! Andy
Date: Thu, 06 Sep 2001 09:20:12 -0700 From: Alberto Tirado Subject: Opening Andy! Little Faces is installed and waiting. If you would like to address the crowd, you can send your words and I will read them at the opening. I hope I can have a digital camera to send some pictures to you. Yesterday, another exhibit opened in Hermosillo - it was "Demonio Meridiano", by Alfonso de Castro (Spain). Unfortunately I couldn't attend. This is "Fotoseptiembre", so it photo big time! Alberto.
Date: Thu, 06 Sep 2001 22:09:30 -0400 (EDT) From: ADavidhazy Hi Alberto, I was a bit busy ... we have Jerry Uelsmann visiting and it has taken a bit more time than I expected. I am glad to hear that things are set to roll and the launch is imminent. > Little Faces is installed and waiting. If you would like to address the > crowd, you can send your words and I will read them at the opening. I hope I > can have a digital camera to send some pictures to you. A word of advice to potential speakers that I always found very wisely applicable is that if you don't have anything meaningful to say don't say anything at all ... although I have also sometimes broken this rule and usually found myself babbling!! not pretty! but ... if you could help me with translation ... First of all I am very gratified and flattered for the oportunity to share my work with colleagues around the world in this simple fashion. The traveling prints or exhibit itself is a work in progress. I hope that the prints serve as a catalyst for thought, conversation and discussion. They have a very simple mission and that is to present an alternative view of reality. Nothing really deeper than that. If during this process I may be of assistance in some fashion I invite correspondence. (In spanish is fine but my technical vocabulary is somewhat limited) I would like to thank the hosts at the institution where the images are installed, the dedicated staff that prepared the images and most significantly Alberto Tirado for taking the initiative and making it possible for this little exhibit to travel to Guaymas. I wish I could be there with you in person but I will definitely be there at least in spirit. Thank you all again for this opportunity. Andres Davidhazy etc. I am not much for titles and so but if you think that is the most appropriate thing to do feel free to mention it. > Yesterday, another exhibit opened in Hermosillo - it was "Demonio > Meridiano", by Alfonso de Castro (Spain). Unfortunately I couldn't attend. > This is "Fotoseptiembre", so it is photo big time! wow! his is great work! Alberto, again ... muchisimas gracias por tu interes, apoyo y dedicacion con este proyecto. I know I "wimped out" by not writing in spanish above but hopefully you will forgive me that ... un gran abrazo te mando, andres
Date: Thu, 06 Sep 2001 22:35:51 -0400 (EDT) From: ADavidhazy Subject: oh ... minor detail Alberto, you may be asked if all this distortion was done by computer manipulation ... this is a common question ... of course the answer is that the computer was not used to distort any image. As explained for film systems in the articles on fotografia de barrido which I have available on the web at: http://www.rit.edu/~andpph/cfm-articulos.html the "digital" camera operates just like the film type in terms of recording and displaying subject placed on a rotating turntable. Hopefully the discussions (if any!!) will include not only the mechanical details of the making of such images but the images themselves. Available in english only still at this time the details behind the making of the camera are also available on the web at: http://www.rit.edu/~andpph/text-better-scanner-cam.html thanks again! andy
Date: Fri, 07 Sep 2001 18:51:50 -0700 From: Alberto Tirado Subject: Briefing on the Caritas opening The "Caritas" opening was a big event. Since my job is time-demanding, I asked for the help of Vicky and Tere, who arranged for the ITSON school to provide the gallery space and took care of the local radio and papers. They also delivered 80 invitations that I printed and went on to mount the photos the previous day. I arrived a bit early to make sure everything was fine. I brought a small banner to fill an empty space and found Leda a bit nervous, making small last-minute changes. She printed a profile I made in a couple of pages in heavy paper. They looked nice, so I got some tape and went on to replace the one we had. The tape make funny thing when you are in a hurry, and it was Leda's first event as an Arts Coordinator, so she started to get nervous... I started to speak fast, but that's the normal me, promess. Vicky and Tere finally arrived... they brought photographers to cover the event and as we gathered around the door the Dean and the school Queen arrived to cut the ribbon. There were some city officials too. I had to explain the work... The Dean asked how long will we have it, "Only two weeks, I'm affraid", I say. "Great, then it can stay here for the week, and the next week it can be taken to Obreg—n - we have more than 10,000 students over there and several art workshops, including photography". All right with me... I think! He also hinted the possibility to look for interchanges between schools, something that they probably will look after. A photographer was insisting on the method. I guess I wasn't so clear, since she kept returning with new questions, but then I made a long cut in a paper and tried a new approach. I think it worked now. Hmmm... perhaps I should build one of these things for myself. I walked out with an architect. "One of the pictures looks so much like Picasso's 'Guernica'... and he is Hungarian..." I am sure I deleted THAT... I guess I'll return on Monday to see if anyone posted another profile. Did I mention I received two diplomas in your name? Will keep you posted on any further updates... and no, I had no camera with me, so I have to wait for these guys to hand me copies for scanning. Alberto
Date: Sat, 08 Sep 2001 08:05:59 -0400 (EDT) From: ADavidhazy Hi Alberto, WOW! I am impressed and delighted! ... the school Queen no less!!! WOW! ... however, it does not sound like you had a few "tranquilizers" before the event like you said you would! Maybe you made up for it afterwards? :) I hope you are finally getting some rest and tranquility on this Saturday! Make sure to give a big thank you (a hug if appropriate!) on my behalf to Vicky and Tere and Leda and any other helpers you had. BTW, making that long cut in the paper and probably then having somone turn behind it while you and the photographerwere on the other side looking through the slot was a very appropriate thing to do! Fast thinking! Taking them to Obregon for the following week sounds fine with me. Hopefully you will get additional assistance for moving them if that should happen. The more sharing the better. Alberto, again, I can't thank you enough for your dedication to this project! have a great day!! andy
Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2001 17:37:55 -0700 From: Alberto Tirado Subject: Little Faces to close on the 25th Andy, It took me several days to grasp the events in NY as actually real - then it took me a few days more to make the connection with RIT and you!!! I hope you are just doing fine. Regarding "Little Faces", then it dawned on me that it will be difficult (slow or otherwise) to send a closed package to enter the USA, so I will use courier (I think it is safer and faster) for several reasons, the fact that "caritas" will close on the 25 notwithstanding. Never mind the cost - I think the school is paying (they have contracts by volume). I will go to Obreg—n on Monday afternoon to chat with the students and talk about the exhibition (will bring pre-cut paper this time! Maybe a couple of overhead transparencies also), so if there is anything you would like to add, just let me know. Best regards, Alberto
Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2001 19:25:16 -0700 From: Alberto Tirado Subject: Where to, now? Andy! I was in Obreg—n yesterday to chat with a group of people about "Caritas". We had a good time and you will probably get email from them - I pointed to a teacher about the Gallery-S exhibit, so you may sometime have more work to do! The organizer in Obreg—n promissed to send pictures of the exhibit space - they did a terrific job! Which reminds me, I haven't asked the guys in Guaymas about the pictures of the opening... My fault. BTW - I just found the link for the full story of the Guaymas exhibit at the itinerary page - I promess to write about the day in Obreg—n, so you get all of the parts !!! Now, I have to send the pictures, but I'm not so sure as to where - I mean, if there is a second set, it should be in Perś, right? So I have to send the package to Liese Ricketts at Chicago, right? If there are any changes, please just let me know. Best regards, Alberto
Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2001 22:28:08 -0400 (EDT) From: ADavidhazy Alberto, I meant to give you Liese's address a number of times but each time I was distracted by something. BTW, yes, the second set (which turned out to be a little bigger in number!) is with Luis Miyashiro in Peru. Anyway, without getting side-tracked here is Liese's address:
Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2001 16:10:36 -0500 From: Liese Ricketts Hi, Andy October will be perfect for me!. Shipping info: University of Chicago Laboratory Schools etc. Can't wait. Thanks, Liese -- Now, again, thanks very much for your help. One of our local reporters may be writing a story about these traveling ink-jet prints and I hope it is OK if I tell him he can contact you for "stuff that reporters do"!!! If there are images of either exhibit I will sure to upload to the running story about their itinerary. Since you saw what I was doing I hope you had no objection to my "scheme" ... the "diary" so to speak of the project! I will be glad to get an exhibition of student work from Obregon! That project has not been exploited as much as it might be. I am, honestly, ruinning out of personal time. My website has grown so diverse I have no time to update things anymore ... it is discouraging!
Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2001 20:01:40 -0700 From: Alberto Tirado Allright! I expect to ship the photos no later than Monday - I will ask DHL about the delivery times and will keep you both informed until they get to their destination. > ... it is OK if I tell him he can contact you for "stuff that reporters do"! Of course! You can send them to me and I will be more than glad to talk to them! I also like the "diary" idea - I surely think it adds to the ambience surrounding the project. Alberto

THANK YOU very much Alberto!!!!
